The difference between a locked and an unlocked phone is that a locked device has a software code on it that prevents you from taking a GSM-based device and using it on another GSM carrier's network. Why is the iPhone treated differently by carriers relative to other phones? In the past, the iPhone was treated differently than other devices when it came to lock codes. For instance, AT&T was happy to unlock any other phone you owned, but according to its policy, the iPhone could never be unlocked. The reason for this was because AT&T didn't want people buying the popular phone and going to another carrier, whether that was T-Mobile or an overseas operator. So to control how and where the device was used, it refused to unlock it.
Also, as I've mentioned, you can get a special code to unlock the software from AT&T so long as you meet the company's requirements. The AT&T code is not the same as the Verizon code. So if your device is locked, you must get the appropriate unlock code from your carrier, or if you are getting the code elsewhere, you should specify which carrier network your device is affiliated with.
The iPhone 4S is not a 4G LTE device, so if you own this device from Verizon, you'll have to get an unlock code from Verizon in order to unlock it. I would call a Verizon customer service agent and tell her you're going out of the country on vacation and you want to use a local SIM card. She'll tell you the requirements for getting your phone unlocked. And if you have met the appropriate criteria, the agent should provide you with the code and instructions for unlocking.
These devices are not capable of being SIM unlocked. Assurance Wireless may be able to provide a Master Subsidy Lock ("MSL") code to eligible customers. The MSL code was utilized with many devices manufactured prior to February 2015. There are some sites and chain emails that list too-good-to-be-true codes, such as dialing *3370# to unlock hidden battery reserves, so you can't trust everything (that code actually reduces power on some Nokia handsets by providing better sound quality for calls).
Surprisingly, Verizon has the friendliest unlocking policy for LTE phones. Whether you purchased your iPhone from an Apple Store or a Verizon shop, Big Red states that it does not lock any 4G LTE devices, so no code is needed to open up your iPhone for use with another carrier. So my sprint phone is unlocked and i decided to use it for now till they figure out the whole situation.tmobile store didnt even set up ive called 3x now 2 different tecs gave me input codes i still get no rec without wifi or out of my house im so annoyed and they still expect me to pay i cannt sen pic messages so frustrated!! Just went and spoke to the store manager at Sprint Braintree, Ma. Steve Medina, he said call customer care and ask for international dept and they would unlock my I phone 6-plus both internationally and domestically. Woman I spoke with said no problem just needed to answer a couple of questions and provide either the MEID or IMEID NUMBER.When she went to unlock it she found it was already unlocked for domestic and international because it was bought from Apple Store then used on sprint.She was going to unlock it though with no problems.Hope this helps

This is in contrast with a GSM phone, which use a SIM card. You can change the SIM cards, as that's how the communications are handled. The only thing the phone is essentially does is acts as a radio. As such, it's practical to unlock these phones. The reason these can be unlocked in most cases (old Nokias without a keypad code can be but it needs SW, but those are the exception not the rule) is due to the way they work, basically just a radio which speaks through a SIM card.
Not all CDMA Carriers are this way, for example all Verizon smart phones come from the factory unlocked for use with all carriers(including iphones). You can unlock a sprint phone by obtaining a code from sprint but they don't like to give them out unless you're a good long time customer, however even unlocked most sprint phones still have very little usability with other carriers other than the iphones. Every phone has a unlock code that removes restrictions on where it can be serviced, and they are available from the manufacturers. Carriers keep unlock codes in their database and unlock phones when they become eligible to be unlocked. Some of those unlock codes are stolen and sold in the black market (or dark web) and monetized by unauthorized persons (or companies). It is illegal for them to sell "stolen" unlock codes. Although it is not illegal for you to buy the code, it may break your contract term with your carrier. It is always best to use your carrier to unlock your phone, and never buy an unlock code from a third-party.
